Trick Or Treat

By Mark

We open with a Young Charles Lee Ray, David Kohlsmith (“Shazam!”, “The Prodigy”), back in 1965, he’s admiring his haul of sweets from Halloween and one random apple. When he looks at it, he sees it has a blade stuck in, despite this, despite pricking his finger on it, he bites into it regardless.

Back in Hackensack and it is Halloween as well as being a full moon. As Jake Wheeler, Zackary Arthur (“ Mom and Dad”, “ The 5th Wave “), heads back to school, minus Chucky, voiced by Brad Dourif who’s always done the Chucky voice, who is now banned, he bumps into Oliver Hayden, Avery Esteves (“The Kid Detective”, “The Oak Room”).

Thus far, Oliver has been a bit of a prick to Jake, but now, suddenly, he’s all smiles, even apologising for the stuff he’s done in the past. Also, his parents are out of town so he’s holding a massive Halloween party, Jake should come, and bring Chucky.

In school Jakes bumps into Devon Evans, Bjorgvin Arnarson (“The Seventh Day”, “Family Time (TV)”), who lost his father when he was nine. He attempts to make-up with Jake, it’s a touch awkward.

Back home meanwhile and Chucky has been left alone in the house with just the cleaner for company. She sees some blood on him and sprays a cleaner in his face to wipe it off. When she goes downstairs to empty the dishwasher, Chucky pushes her over and she falls onto the knives which have been loaded blade-up.

Detective Evans, Rachelle Casseus (“Running with Violet (TV)”, “Bokeh (Short)”), Devon’s mum, arrives and says it looks like an accident. But she has to ask; did Jake have anything against the housekeeper? Did Junior, Teo Briones (“Wind River”, “Ratched (TV)”)?

Dad Logan, Devon Sawa (“Disturbing the Peace”, “The Fanatic”), and mom Bree, Lexa Doig (“Arrow (TV)”, “Continuum (TV)”), are shocked. Of course not, Jake had only just met her and she practically raised Junior.

Jake knows what’s happened and he confronts Chucky who says he didn’t do it. He says some people just deserve to die and he’s got his sights set higher than the cleaner. Logan and Bree discuss Jake though, Bree in particular is unsure about him, but both Jake and Junior are listening in.

Caroline Cross, Carina Battrick (“Feel the Beat”, “Falling”), Lexy Cross’, Alyvia Alyn Lind (“Daybreak (TV)”, “Future Man (TV)”), younger sister, turns out to be an amazing artist. She’s drawing Chucky from memory, her parents hugely impressed, which is more than can be said for Lexy, because it’s not about her she’s not interested. Lexy’s parents also stop her from going to the party and tell her she has to go trick or treating with her sister.

At the party, which Jake decides he’s not going to, until he notices Chucky is missing, Lexy has a surprise outfit. She is dressed as Jake’s dad, acting out him being electrocuted much to the amusement of everyone watching. Lexy has brought her sister to the party, left her downstairs playing video games, now with Chucky.

Chucky meanwhile finds his way to the party via a trick or treat stop where he gives a woman an apple…Detective Evans investigates that when the woman cuts her mouth open and she recognises the description given.

Feels like we are on our way to the killings being ramped up in this episode. Jake’s reluctance to entertain Chucky’s desire is waning and he’s starting to see his point of view, particularly after Lexy’s antics at the party.

Junior meanwhile, remains suspicious of his new house mate, hearing him talking to Chucky and believing Jake ‘disturbed’, you’d say his mother probably agrees!
