Dr. Brain — Episode 5, Chapter 5 Review
It’s All Coming To A Head
We left Sewon, Sun-kyun Lee (“ Parasite “, “2036 Apocalypse Earth”), in Dr. Hyun, Lee El (“When the Devil Calls Your Name (TV)”, “What a Man Wants”), office, looking at a photograph and recognising the people in said photograph. As Dr. Hyun barges in, with some muscle, the office is empty.
She notices the balcony doors are open and finds Sewon hanging on the ledge. As the muscle tries to get him down he does his Incredible Hulk cat-eye thing and drops many metres, landing cleanly on his feet, like a cat.
Meanwhile the police detective Jiun, Seo Ji-hye (“Dinner Mate (TV)”, “Crash Landing on You (TV)”), and Sergeant Park, Jo Bok-Rae (“Navillera (TV)”, “Door Lock”), find Sewon’s former colleague Namil Hong, Jae-won Lee (“Mr. Queen (TV)”, “Record of Youth (TV)”).
However, so does one of the bad guys, Joo-Won Lee (“Knowing Bros (TV)”, “Real Men 300 (TV)”). Just as he is about to kill Hong, Park decides, rather than shoot him with the gun in his hand, he’ll attack him, it doesn’t end well. Hong gets away but is caught by Jiun.
Sewon goes to see one of the doctors in the photo he saw, Dr. Myung, Moon Sung-Keun (“Nobody Knows (TV)”, “Burning”), someone who he also visited when his own mother passed away, the man who brought him up.
The Doctor is now in a wheelchair and has Secretary Yoon, Teo Yoo (“New Year Blues”, “Money Game (TV)”), with him. This is the man we’ve seen speaking to the goons previously, with the dogs.
Dr. Myung tells Sewon a story, that he’s had three opportunities in his life: one was Sewon coming into his life, two was an American benefactor funding the research — which we see in flashback as Myung introduces Hong to the team, and they are doing the same brain research Sewon was doing — and the third was being introduced to Sewon’s son, Doyoon.
As Myung is telling Sewon his story, Hong is telling detective Jiun his story, and the two overlap as it becomes clear that Hong was a spy, put in by Myung and Yoon to ensure they were never too far behind Sewon’s research.
We learn that Kangmu Lee, Park Hee-Soon (“My Name (TV)”, “Revenger”), was taken out by Secretary Yoon and Hong, who started to like Sewon, saw an opportunity to give him some clues by getting him to sync with Lee.
Back with Myung and he tells Sewon exactly what his plans are, what he plans to do with himself and with Doyoon, Sewon’s son.
We leave things as Sewon, for some reason released by Myung and Yoon, realises that his wife Jaeyi, Joo-Young Lee (“Times (TV)”, “Baseball Girl”), must have seen or heard something to know that Doyoon is still alive. So he syncs with her again, with the help of Hong.
We’re obviously getting to the end of the season here as things are being explained to us in detail. However, it all feels a bit like we’ve seen it all before and, I’m sorry to say, we’ve seen it better elsewhere.
Now we know what’s going on I guess the final episode will wrap everything up nicely then? Obviously I’m joking, it will more than likely leave things wide open for season two
