Suspicion — Episode 4, The Devil You Know Review
Let The Clichés Roll
By Mark
Eddie Walker, Tom Rhys Harries (“White Lines (TV)”, “The Gentlemen”), is questioned by Vanessa Okoye, Angel Coulby (“Innocent (TV)”, “Thunderbirds Are Go (TV)”). He’s calm, cool, says he has nothing to hide, that is until she asks about his parents, then his attitude changes. He’s released.
Eddie heads to Aadesh Chopra’s, Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory (TV)”, “Trolls World Tour”), place, which is all over social media, to find him sleeping in his car a bit further down the road. He says he thinks they’re all being setup and he’s worried his parents will cut off his allowance. He convinces Aadesh to find the others and then they can all make a public statement about their innocence.
Meanwhile the police get Natalie Thompson, Georgina Campbell (“ Black Mirror (TV) “, “Broadchurch (TV)”), to talk to Sean Tilson, Elyes Gabel (“Scorpion (TV)”, “Spooks: The Greater Good”), on the phone and arrange a meet, but at the last minute he switches the location.
They go anyway and Vanessa hides, badly, in the car. When they arrive Tilson is on a motorbike with a blacked out visor and when he gets the money he shoots Nat, the police make their move but it turns out the police won’t drive through metal gates…apparently.
Meanwhile in the US of A, Katherine Newman, Uma Thurman (“Imposters (TV)”, “ Down a Dark Hall “), isn’t happy about the silence anymore, particularly when Scott Anderson, Noah Emmerich (“The Truman Show”, “The Walking Dead (TV)”), updates her that they’ve lost Tilson.
She decides, with assistance from her employees, Indra Ové (“Sex Education (TV)”, “Breeders (TV)”) and Martin Copeland, Robert Glenister (“ Curfew (TV) “, “Close to the Enemy (TV)”), to put out a statement but she won’t read it, her senior communications person Barbara, Melissa Collier (“Alice Through the Looking Glass”, “In the Name of”), will.
The statement declares that Katherine has given the US Government lots of money but some of it came from the sale of a house in London and the buyer was under government sanctions so she shouldn’t have done. She withdraws from the ambassador roll.
This isn’t enough for whoever has her son though, no sooner has Barabara finished then the TV is taken over again and a picture of a man is shown and she’s asked to tell the truth about what he knows.
Tilson meanwhile meets another operative who gives him a bag, tells him everything he needs to vanish forever is inside, he then tries to kill him, there’s more eye-roll inducing action.
Eddie and Aadesh meanwhile arrive at Tara’s, Elizabeth Henstridge (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV)”, “Wolves at the Door”), to ask her to join them, but she doesn’t want to know. She threatens them with the police but before anyone can do anything a black van arrives and they are bundled into it by masked men to find Nat and Monique, Lydia West (“Years and Years (TV)”, “It’s a Sin (TV)”), already in the back.
They are driven to a remote airport, miles away, and made to kneel and asked where Leo is. No-one knows, or will answer, will they get out of there alive?
This episode, sadly, is so chocked full of clichés that I’m surprised it didn’t burst at the seams. My eyes rolled so far back in my head I think they did a 360. The police sting that goes wrong, the chase, the assassination attempt, the arrival of people ‘just in time’, all crammed in less than hour. Hey, some of you may be fine with it, for me, it wasn’t just a step too far, it was a complete leap!
