The Afterparty — Episode 2, Brett Review

Koala!

By Mark

This time round we are getting Brett’s, Ike Barinholtz (“ Bright”, “ Suicide Squad”), story which Yasper, Ben Schwartz (“Space Force (TV)”, “ Sonic the Hedgehog “), and Aniq, Sam Richardson (“The Tomorrow War”, “Werewolves Within”), are listening into from the bathroom, because Yasper installed the intercom system in the house.

Brett arrives at the party and sees his old friend Ned, Kelvin Yu (“ Wonder Woman 1984 “, “Milk”), and then Zoe, Zoe Chao (“Love Life (TV)”, “Dirty Beautiful”), his ex-wife. She’s not happy he’s there, he isn’t meant to be there, he’s meant to be home looking after their daughter Maggie, Everly Carganilla (“The Chair (TV)”, “Yes Day”).

Brett is there though, and he’s there to ensure that Zoe doesn’t do something she may later regret, or as Detective Danner, Tiffany Haddish (“Girl’s Trip”, “Night School”), puts it, he’s cock-blocking.

Anyway, at the party we see Brett sabotage the presentation and we see him have a literal piss-off with Xavier, Dave Franco (“ 6 Underground”, “ The Disaster Artist “), who was bullied by Brett in school.

Because of both these things, Xavier tells Brett he’s going to spend the evening getting to know Zoe better, and then bone her later. This infuriates Brett and he spends the evening keeping an eye on Zoe.

At one point, whilst looking for Zoe, Brett bumps into Chelsea, Ilana Glazer (“Green Eggs and Ham (TV)”, “The Night Before”), a known drunk, who says she has big plans for Xavier, and everyone will see them, tonight.

We also see the car chase and Brett pushing Aniq into the prawn display, from his point of view. He was chasing them because Aniq had Maggie’s teddy, and that’s also why he pushed him.

We also get Brett’s account of what occurred when he runs upstairs after seeing Zoe and Xavier together, and it’s different from Aniq’s account. Brett also had to spend some time looking for Maggie at the party, after she’d escaped the car, where he’d left her, and sees Chelsea talking to Xavier.

Walt, Jamie Demetriou (“Stath Lets Flats (TV)”, “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain”), also pops-up every now and again. He’s either set to be Mr. Cameo or he’s a bigger part than appears…

In the bathroom Aniq has put together more of the message he found in the bin, “now’s the time to feel the pain, what goes around, comes around…”. He also notices, and eventually gets Yasper to agree, that the writing on his face is in the same handwriting as that of the letter, but neither knows who wrote on his face.

Detective Culp, John Early (“Search Party (TV)”, “The Great North (TV)”), has had a call from the Captain, he knows this isn’t their case. But Danner promises he can take anything from the house, if she helps him solve it.

The final shot shows us that there is a camera, seemingly recording, in the very room where Xavier fell to his death, I mean, it’s his bedroom and looking at the bed, we shouldn’t be surprised.

A funny episode of The Afterparty, showing how the same story can be seen from different points of view. Everly is great as the daughter, she’s very funny, and Franco excels as the annoying, cloying Xavier.
