Let’s Make An Album

By Mark

Nora, Lilly Singh (“Bad Moms”, “The Bad Guys”), is a record executive working at Wax Town Records which, as her boss Penny, Leslie Carrara-Rudolph (“Sesame Street (TV)”), puts it, is dead in the water. All Penny wants Nora to do is shred the contracts.

It is whilst doing this that Nora discovers there is a band that still owes the label an album. That band? The Electric Mayhem Band from The Muppets who have been on a perpetual tour since the TV show ended and are not a band that can be pinned down.

Once Nora has tracked the band down and asked them to either repay the advance they received, or come and make the album the episodes then take the track of teaching various lessons in various guises, from lies are bad to being nice is easy.

Gary ‘Moog’ Moogowski, Tahj Mowry (“Me Time”, “Baby Daddy (TV)”), is the band’s biggest fan and also appears to be a musician himself though no-one will listen to his music, no doubt that will crop up towards the end of the series.

There’s lots of parties, lots of celebrities and cameos, some of which are recurring, others are one-offs. The messages continue and various band members have their time in the spotlight of an episode, including Nora’s sister Hannah, Saara Chaudry (“Holly Hobbie (TV)”, “The Breadwinner”), with whom Nora falls out with at one point.

The series is littered with cameos including: Billy Corgan, Colton Dunn, Lil Nas X, Chris Stapleton, Tommy Lee, Ryan Secrest, Steve Aoki, Danny Trejo, Zedd with the tune of British Blues Singer Joe Cocker’s — Have A Little Faith running throughout too, which is nice.

The band consist of: Dr Teeth, Bill Barretta, Zoot, Dave Goelz, Animal, Eric Jacobson, Lips, Peter Linz, Janice, David Rudman, Floyd Pepper, Matt Vogel.

Episodes are written by Bill Barretta, Adam F. Goldberg, Jeff Yorkes, Donielle Muransky, Crystal Shaw King, Julie Bean, Hannah Friedman, Hans Rodionoff and Gabriela Rodriguez with episodes directed by Matt Sohn and Robert Cohen.

The Muppets Mayhem is a quick series to get through, with each episode running at around 30 minutes and overall it is an easy watch though the messages feel like they are being hammered home at times. No doubt kids will love the bright colours and antics that are shown at times, but there’s not an awful lot for the parents to look forward to.
