The Shrink Next Door — Episode 2, The Ceremony Review

Marty’s Bar Mitzvah?

By Mark

Martin ‘Marty’ Markowitz, Will Ferrell (“Between Two Ferns: The Movie”, “ The LEGO Movie 2”), is feeling empowered, he believes Dr. Isaac ‘Ike’ Herschkopf, Paul Rudd (“Between Two Ferns: The Movie”, “ Avengers: Endgame “), is really helping him.

As Marty is trying to ‘become the master of his domain’, laying some ground rules at work, he receives a phone call from Ike and he rushes out to meet him.

Ike tells him he thinks it would be a great idea, for his upcoming 40th birthday, to have a second Bar Mitzvah, given he spent most of his first one in the toilet. Marty’s sisters Phyllis Shapiro, Kathryn Hahn (“WandaVision (TV)”, “Transparent (TV)”), doesn’t think it’s a great idea.

She goes to their Rabbi who doesn’t know anything about this second Bar Mitzvah and so she then begins enquiries about Ike, his reputation. This upsets Ike, a lot, and he starts putting into Marty’s mind that perhaps Phyllis doesn’t have his best intentions at heart.

Marty has a row with his sister about it, tells her not to come, even if she changes her mind. At the Bar Mitzvah, Ike takes centre stage and sounds like an angel when reciting…Marty, not so much and forgets a lot of the words, they pretty much end up duetting, until Marty gets his groove.

Marty doesn’t know anyone at his own Bar Mitzvah, standing alone at the bar, his stomach begins to play up, but the good doctor talks him around, again.

Meanwhile, his sister has a cake, with her children, and no Marty, having to apologise for him. You can feel them growing apart already.

We haven’t leapt into the full depths of what Ike gets up to with Marty, but we are certainly seeing his devious ways. It’s little things like saying he has a great DJ, providing Marty doesn’t mind paying, inviting all his friends to Marty’s Bar Mitzvah but really, it’s Ike’s chance to have the Bar Mitzvah he never had, that his parents couldn’t afford.

On the other hand, you begin to see just how much Marty has come to rely on Ike even in such a small time. Although apparently he was seeing him three times a week!

If you love that sort of ‘cringe comedy/drama’, when you just want to grab the protagonist, shake them, shout at them “just say no!”, “open your eyes!”, then you’re going to love this.

Stuart Zicherman (“The Americans (TV)”, “The Affair (TV)”) writes this episode with Michael Showalter (“The Lovebirds”, “Grace and Frankie (TV)”) behind the camera once more.
